The Feng Shui Bagua – Exploring the First Sector: The Career or Journey

In this newsletter, we begin our exploration of the bagua, the nine-square grid overlay which is placed on the floor plan of your home, office, or property, starting with the Career sector.

The Career sector is the area which reflects your job, the tasks you select or are chosen to perform, the industries you find yourself drawn to, and your ability to find and hold jobs.

If you wish to advance or shift your career, does the artwork or photos located in this area symbolically or literally suggest this goal?  Is there relevant meaning behind the images and objects in this area, supportive of where you wish to go? A professional golfer might hang a beautifully framed poster of a golf course, for example.

Contemplate the talents and skills you possess which you use in your current job or those you wish to use in a future career. The Career sector is an appropriate place to show them off and start manifesting positive results.

Above all, be sure the area is not oppressive and stifling to your career due to disorganization and clutter. Clutter in this area will hinder career advancement and new opportunities. If you’ve managed to accumulate clutter in the Career sector of your home or office, ask yourself:  do I feel I’ve reached a dead-end in my current position? Do I feel stuck, obstructed, perhaps even depressed about the work I do? Am I feeling overwhelmed with too much work that I don’t know what to do first and things seem to be getting out of control? If you can recognize any of these conditions occurring in your career, start clearing out and offer space to this area (of the room and your life) so you and your career can breathe and move again!

In addition to career objectives, this area also reflects your individuality, your personal Dharma, your unique expression, your path. This is where your journey begins and changes over time, as you and your goals evolve. This area of your home or office should showcase something of what your individual path in life means to you.

For this, the Career/Journey sector, take a few moments and ask yourself:  What is my purpose? What does my life mean to me? Do I feel a sense of productivity and usefulness? Have I put my unique expression and abilities into action? What is it that I want to do? What is it that I’m good at? What comes naturally to me? Do I require more education to implement the changes I wish to see? What can I share or teach? How can I help and serve others? Where can this passion of mine take me? How can it make a difference in my life and in the lives of others?

This area is a place to honor your Self. No one is walking in your shoes. No one but you is walking your path. You are a unique individual. Ideally, this sector in your home or office should encourage you to value, cherish, and share who you are, your authentic self, so that you may live an authentic life.

Feng Shui enhancements for this area, in addition to appropriate artwork and imagery, include:

the use of dark colors, such as black and deep indigo. There are simple ways you can bring these colors into the environment, from furniture and picture frames to drapery fabric, rugs, or throw pillows, for example.

having a water feature, such as a water fountain or fish tank. Water is the element associated with the Career sector, representing the flow of your individual path through life and the opportunities you create and experience.

displaying objects made of glass, items that are free-formed, curvy or wavy. These characteristics are representative of the element of Water, and provide another means in which to establish Water in this space.

To many people in religious, New Age, or spiritual groups, dark colors, especially black, are considered “negative”. If you prefer not to use dark colors, you can choose from the other options and still Feng Shui the area. But it is quite simple to understand where the ancient Chinese principle behind dark colors stems from.

When Feng Shui masters walked through the mountains of those ancient kingdoms and came upon running or still pools of water in their natural state, the water appeared black or dark blue, often darkened by the shade of foliage in the surrounding landscape.  We encounter this in our own hikes through the forests today. Alignment and attunement to the rhythm and visual attributes of Nature is at the core of good Feng Shui. Therefore, black or deep blues are considered very natural colors, with no negative connotations attached.

In Feng Shui, black and other dark colors, represent mystery, curiosity, depth, insightfulness, receptivity, and reflection. These are qualities each of us must possess and tap into in order to delve into our own nature and determine which individual path and professional career is best suited to our goals, character, and abilities.

What does the Career sector of your home and/or office say about you? Does it support your path, your service, how you wish to express in the world? When you non-judgmentally observe the space, can you determine if the element of Water is represented, even in a small dose?

To support your Career and Life Path aspirations, take some time to write an affirmation, place the affirmation inside a red envelope, and place the envelope somewhere in this sector. You can choose to conceal it, such as between two books, inside a book, or taped behind framed artwork or a mirror. Or, you can rest the envelope against an object and let it remind you of your intent with each passing.

In the upcoming newsletter, we will look into the second sector of the bagua, Relationships.
